Sydney Sweeney Jeans Ad Sparks Controversy, American Eagle Responds

Must read

American Eagle has officially addressed the growing controversy around the viral Sydney Sweeney jeans ad that’s taken over social media and even caught national attention.

The ad features actress Sydney Sweeney delivering a cheeky line: “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring often determining traits like hair color personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.” What was meant to be a playful word twist on “genes” and “jeans” quickly became a lightning rod online.

American Eagle Defends the Intent Behind the Campaign

In a public Instagram post the brand stated clearly that the Sydney Sweeney jeans ad was always about celebrating personal style and individuality. According to American Eagle it was simply about the jeans her jeans her story.

“Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence their way.”

Despite the statement many online critics claimed the ad contained subtle messaging that was racially or culturally insensitive. Some took issue with the wordplay especially because Sweeney is white blonde and blue eyed which led to allegations that the ad promoted outdated ideals or even eugenics. This was fueled by a viral TikTok video that reached over 1.4 million views.

However others have strongly pushed back saying the backlash is baseless. Multiple creators and commenters defended the campaign calling it harmless and creative and argued that cancel culture is once again overreaching.

Sydney Sweeney Remains Silent Amid Viral Storm

Sydney Sweeney has not publicly addressed the jeans ad controversy but she remains booked and busy. After her breakout roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus she’s continued building a powerful resume with films like Reality Immaculate and Anyone But You.

She’s also become a major brand magnet with campaigns for Armani Beauty Miu Miu Laneige and Baskin Robbins. In fact Baskin Robbins disabled comments on posts featuring Sweeney likely in response to the current uproar.

While the debate around the Sydney Sweeney jeans ad continues to divide opinions online the brand’s statement appears to be standing its ground.
